12 Differences Between Google+ and Facebook

  1. On Facebook, you add people to lists whilst on Google+ you add them to circles. Google+ provides a better user interface for adding people to circles therefore making it a more pleasant experience than on Facebook.
  2. Google through its online properties like Google Search, Gmail, YouTube, Chrome, Google Checkout etc, Google has access to a vast amount of information on their users and as such is able to provide a much more personalized experience on the web but Facebook access is limited to the profile of users on Facebook and their likes across the web.
  3. Google+ allows you to choose how your profile appears to others on the web and which circle of friend you share your content with. Facebook on the other hand does better here because it not only allows you to select which list of friends to share with but it goes as far as allowing you to exclude individuals with whom you might not want to share that content even if they are in that list.
  4. Facebook offers a text-based chat system and a one-on-one video calling feature via Skype. Google+ has Hangouts which enables upto 10 people at a time to have not just text but a face-to-face audio, video interaction. This is an neat feature that will benefit small business.
  5. Facebook is awesome when it comes to connecting you with friends, family members, former classmates, etc for light conversation and entertainment. Google+ on the other hand has provided a platform for you to meet interesting people from across the globe who share your passion and learn from them.
  6. Facebook does not offer topic-based feeds but through Google+ Sparks you get information on a topic all in one place. If you’ve ever used Google Alert, then you will notice that Sparks is like an advanced form of Google Alerts.
  7. Google+ users can edit their comments, which is time-stamped. Facebook does not allow you to edit your comments after you’ve made it.
  8. Google+ users can disable the comments and sharing feature for each post to disallow others from sharing their content on the web. Facebook only allows you to block persons from seeing your wall.
  9. The Huddle feature on Google+ is similar to Blackberry’s Messanger system as it allows you to chat with a select group of people all at once. Facebook tries to counteract this with their Groups feature but the experience is not the same.
  10. Uploading Photos and videos from Android phones is automatic on Google+ and the drag-and-drop feature for adding photos on Google+ is also a pleasant experience. But it is a time consuming experience on Facebook.
  11. Facebook Pages is a good platform for small businesses and brands to interact with customers and the general public on the social level. Facebook Pages has been around for quite a while now and has a lot of features to offer but Google+ Pages is just a few weeks old. But recent indications has shown that its better for businesses and brand to claim their space on Google+ pages to benefit from the backlink to Google and thereby making them more visible online.
